Pixel 11 promises seven years of updates. Fairphone scored a perfect 10 on repair
Two different theories of how a phone stays alive. One keeps the software fresh, the other keeps the hardware fixable — and you currently cannot buy both.
Google launched the Pixel 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro XL on the Tensor G6, starting at $899 for the 256GB base model, with availability from 20 August and seven years of software support.
Days later, the Fairphone 6 Plus earned a perfect 10/10 repairability score from iFixit, with modular cameras and display removable using standard tools, alongside an expansion into direct U.S. sales.
Both companies are selling longevity. They disagree completely about what makes a phone last.
Two failure modes, two answers
Phones die in one of two ways. Either the software stops being safe to use, or something physical breaks and fixing it costs more than replacement.

Google’s seven years is a genuine commitment and the most concrete thing any large vendor offers, because it maps to the actual reason most phones become unusable: the security patches stop and the device becomes unwise to bank on. Seven years also happens to substantially exceed the average holding period, which makes it a real transfer of value to second-hand buyers.
Fairphone’s 10/10 addresses the other half. A modular display and camera assembly removable with standard tools means the most common physical failures cost a part rather than a device. Anyone who has priced an out-of-warranty screen replacement against a refurbished handset knows how often that maths currently favours the landfill.
Neither is sufficient alone
A Pixel with seven years of patches and a shattered, glued-in screen is a seven-year promise you cannot collect on. A Fairphone you can repair indefinitely still becomes unsafe when its chipset stops receiving vendor firmware support — and that ceiling is set by the silicon vendor, not by Fairphone.
The uncomfortable conclusion is that the two properties are not really in tension for engineering reasons. Glued batteries and laminated displays buy thinness and water resistance, and those are the attributes that sell phones in a shop. Repairability loses to millimetres.
Regulation is what turns a virtue nobody buys into a specification everybody publishes.
Which is why the regulatory context matters
Fairphone’s score arriving as right-to-repair rules tighten is not incidental. Repairability has historically been a niche purchase motivation — people say they value it and then buy the thinner phone. Mandated repairability indices and parts-availability requirements change that by making the property comparable at the point of sale rather than discoverable three years later at a repair counter.
Seven years of updates arrived the same way. It became a headline feature roughly when regulators started discussing minimum support periods. The vendors moved first and got the credit, which is how this usually works and is fine.
The device worth wanting has both: a support window measured in years past the average upgrade cycle, and a screen and battery replaceable by a local shop for a fraction of replacement cost. In August 2026 you still have to pick one, and the honest advice is to pick based on how you break phones.
